Drama Taxi,Taxi Puts Montage of Vietnam War&City Life on stage
Play director Kim sang-soos Taxi, Taxi, begin shown at the Sanullim Theater in Shin-chon through Nov.20,is a serious drama that gives a limelight on the trauma of the Vietnam war through war-like images of city life.
Taxi, Taxi, written and directed by Kim, a talented scenarist for made-for-television movies and feature films, is the 30-years-old directors keen insight into the historical tragedies complicatedly interwoven in a recent history of Korea.
This time, the play-wrighter-cum-director sheds a spotlight on the trauma of Korean Vietnam War veteran who lives as a taxi driver in Seoul. The images of his Vietnam War experience and a taxi drivers daily life that looks like a wartime battle, The third pillar of story line is provided by the sad episode of a poor teenage factory worker(actress Park Kyong Suk)who dashes into a taxi to get paid compensation money illegally from the taxi driver(Chong Chas-Jin), hero of the drama.
The wartime memories are depicted in several flashback scenes on drama while the taxi driver meets a group of urban misfits in his taxi. Miss Han Song-I, TV performer for MBC-TV, takes the multiple roles of urban misfits who spin yarns about a womens life as a commercial film model, a singer aspirant, and a pregnant woman.
Chong Chae-jin exels in his portrait of bedraggled cab driver who still suffers from his traumatic Vietnam War experience. Chongs recounting of Vietnam war and ordinary taxi driver is enlivened by his remarkable caliber of acting.
Miss Han is Chongs partner on stage, who is depicted as a twisted heroine in a hedonic society. Her accounts of daily urban living is one is one of the highlight scenes of the drama. Actress Chong Hi-young plays a minor role as a Vietnam woman, the typical victim of wars in modern times.
Director Kim quotes the framework of the stage work from montage technique in cinema that juxtaposes the scenes of war and city life, mainly episodes happening on taxi, on stage. It is clash of images that director Kim wants to show on stage for the symbolic portrait of contemporarians in Korea.
On center stage at the small theater Sanullim, there is a real taxi that director Kim employs as the only stage prop. As the apparent contrast against the dark stage, the yellow-colored taxi offers the man area of acting.
Actually, it is the first time for the stage production that intensively reflects the shocking images of the Vietnam War a history of drama in Korea. I want to tell the tragedy of Koreans involvement in the dirty war through a life of an ordinary taxi driver, said Kim who also tries to make his cinema directing debut next year with his own scenario.
Kim made his stage directing debut with Circle, a total theatrical work for the human beings primitive characters wrapped up in a civilized patterns in 1978 at the age of 20. He is perhaps the youngest stage director who made a splashing debut in local theater circles.
Including People, the drama to commemorate the bicentennial anniversary of the Catholic mission in Korea four years ago, Kims previous works attracted keen attention of critics and audiences for his sharp insight into histropical problems of Korea in a contemporary setting. People, performed at the open-air stage in Myong dong Cathedral, was vivid depiction of human being living conditions at a time when belivers of a religion faced social persecution because of prejudice.
Exchanges of Prisoners if war, a 1985 stage production, was a serious study on the meaning of the fratricidal Korean War. As a post-war generation writer, Kim reviewed the past wartime generations tragic experience with his own point of view that put an accent on human beings struggle to live in an insane world.
