I was a student at the Yale S chool of Music, and played in the Yale Philharmonia under Hahm. I can attest to Hahm¡¯s lack of competence as a conductor and as a musician. I have worked with some of the world¡¯s foremost musicians and conductors and Hahm ranks as below mediocre in my book. When the previous conductor (Larry Smith) at Yale left, there was a ¡®nation wide¡¯ search for a new conductor. One person who applied for the open position (who was rejected), that had far greater credentials than Hahm, was a Assistant Conductor with the New York Philharmonic. The ¡®nation wide¡¯ search turned into an ¡®across-the-parking-lot¡¯ search when Hahm was hired (Hahm was already a conductor of the undergraduate
Yale Symphony Orchestra). After reading this, one might ask, why then would Hahm be hired? He has many ties with affluent businessmen in Asia who have contributed to the school¡¯s endowment. I even met one such CEO he invited to the school.
One other thing (as one can see from the quoted e-mail sent out by Shinik Hahm), he cannot write a sentence in English with proper grammar. This e-mail was no exception. I recall getting many e-mails from him and pamphlets he printed out on his own with multiple misspelled words and improperly conjugated verbs. Does such a person belong at Yale University?

I spent two years playing under Hahm as a grad student at Yale. My time there was very rewarding and well spent but Hahm stands out as a major exception to that. I was very frustrated and dismayed as far as his skill, attitude and musicianship and when I had the chance was vocal about his unworthiness of his position there. I certainly would be right in step with the orchestra members in this article. On a side note, it is strange and sad that the Yale School of Music, with it's rising status and quality after the large endowment continues to employ Hahm. There is no question in my mind as to whether he's holding the school back.

The big giveaway is the fact that non of the players are paying the slightest attention to the stick man, they are just on autopilot, trying to co-ordinate the ensemble by themselves¡¦¡¦but, oh my, the tuning!!!! This means the ¡®conductor¡¯ must be tone deaf!!!¡¦.total amateur in front of the band¡¦¡¦

If a music director is not supported by the orchestra he should leave.a fight resulting in dismissals o f musicians will only damage the orchestra and the international reputation of the conductor.

Where do I begin? I've never seen a worse teacher, nor any so full of hot air and self importance. He seems to operate in a completely other world from the students he purports to mentor. Yale has let themselves down terribly.

I agree with the prior postings. There has been an overwhelmingly bad response from not just one person but the entire student body (and some faculty) in regard to Hahm. He is an ignorant neophyte and a bad musician. Couldn't Yale do better than him?
